as the interpretation of lilith has changed throughout the centuries, her representations have changed as well. from a winged demoness flanked by owls to a hairy-legged creature of the night, her representations have reflected the cultures from which they originated.

pre-judaic images of lilith and her predecessors

• a sumerian or akkadian image presumed to be lilith called the burney relief: this relief is assumed to represent lilith, based on kramer's translation of the prologue to the epic of gilgamesh. the controversy over the identity of the figure in this relief is discussed here.
